Do you know product dimensions play a crucial role in the packaging manufacturing process? Why? Let’s suppose you are planning to launch a new product line, you need a beautifully designed and perfectly sized box for it. But how can you achieve that if you don’t have a proper box size? The answer is quite simple: by measuring its product dimensions.
In this blog post, we will explore and learn how to measure your product dimensions.
What Measurements Do You Need?
Just like box dimensions, you need to measure three dimensions for your product. Those dimensions are:
- Length
- Width
- Height/Depth.
Now you know what measurements you need for your box, let’s talk about the tools you will need to measure these measurements. There are various tools to measure these dimensions, but we recommend the following:
- Measurement Tape
- Ruler
- Vernier Caliper (For cylindrical products)
Choose the tool that best suits your product needs.
Now that you know which tools you need to measure your product, let’s dive into learning how to measure your product size.
How to Measure Rectangular Products?
If you need a box for a rectangular product, you should follow the following steps to measure its dimensions. For demonstration, we will use the hard drive case as a rectangular product for product measurements.
Step 1. Measure its Length
Place it on a flat surface to determine its length, as shown below in the image. In our case, the length of the hard drive case is 4.7 inches, and we used a ruler as our measurement tool.
Step 2. Measure its Width
Once you have placed your product on a flat surface, measure its width from front to back as shown in the image. In our case, the width for the hard drive case is 3 inches by using a ruler.
Step 3. Measure its Height/Depth
Once you have placed your product on a flat surface, measure its depth from top to bottom as shown in the image. In our case, the width for the hard drive case is inches by using a ruler.
Now we know that the measurement for a rectangular product is 4.7” X 3” X 0.5” (L X W X H), you can add 2mm or 0.0787 inches to these measurements for your box. By doing so, you can easily fit your product into the box.
How to Measure Cylindrical Products?
In case you are dealing with a cylindrical product, you have to use a vernier caliper for its measurements. For cylindrical products length and width remain the same. To demonstrate, we are using a lip balm container to take measurements.
Step 1. Measuring its Length and Width
To measure the cylindrical product, you have to place it in between the claws as shown in the image below. We will also consider the lid sides as well when measuring its length and width. In our case, it was 2.049 inches.
Step 2. Measuring its Height
Place your cylindrical product in between the claws of the vernier caliper as shown below in the image. The height for this container is 0.723 inches.
Now you know how to measure your product dimensions for manufacturing a perfectly sized box. Don’t forget to add 0.0787 inches to your product measurement. So it can fit perfectly in the box.
